Revert "Fix crash in extendSelection"

This reverts commit b85bbaa8c8807ab3619cddc35b634c2bb43e09fb.

This change caused a critical regression in the stable branch: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=403117

Reverting it on master too since it's broken there as well.
