I really like the subject as part of the mail. Gives the whole thing a much more balanced look.
So in general I think this is great as it is.

A couple of questions though:

  • Where would attachments go?
  • Do we want to always show "From: ...." given that it is somewhat redundant with the avatar? (Although we possibly want to show which email address has been used, so maybe not a bad idea, at least for now)
  • If the little arrow in the top-right is for collapsing the mail, we'd probably still want to show the subject somewhere (we don't if it's in the mail by default)

You removed the avatar. Was that intentionally?

  • attachments: either underneath the header or at the bottom or both. we still have to do the mockup though
  • showing "from": seeing the actual sender address is an important security feature.
  • the little arrow is for enlarging the header view to show all the details we hide.
