Summary

The Windows installation methods listed in the Getting Started guide don't mention a couple of recent developments. I updated them:

  • They now list Steam and the Windows Store as potential (non-free) options, with clear indication that they are the same product, just auto-updating.
  • They now indicate that the download page will recommend a download version.
  • They reference the download page for getting the portable version, with the KDE download directory mentioned only as an alternate location.
  • They have the correct Windows version requirement.
  • The outdated Intel bug was removed.

I would like to mention the Shell extension for KRA previews here. I notice that my Store-version--created files have a preview, and my other (older) files don't.

Is the shell extension bundled with the Store version, or are previews automatically saved for it? I'm happy to update the diff appropriately.

The shell extension is bundled with the Krita installer and thus gets automatically included in the Store version. It's also available in a separate installer for those who need it.

It's been there for ages - I remember testing the initial code with files saved with Krita version 2.9.11 and it should have worked. It simply loads the PNG thumbnail preview from the .kra file. If it doesn't load, it's probably a problem with the file.

I would prefer not to include third-party systems like this, otherwise we'll have to mention all of them.

This should also be updated: Vista is no longer supported.

@alvinhochun In that case, should I write something like:

Note: the portable (zip-file) version of Krita does not show previews in Windows Explorer automatically. To get these previews, either use the installer version, a store version, or install the shell extension available on the download page.

@rempt I understand the aversion to third-party systems and the maintenance hassle they can require!

However, Chocolatey is basically the equivalent of Homebrew on Mac. There are official Microsoft-Chocolatey collaborations and it's mentioned in official docs.

Also, as far as I can tell, the Krita package is officially maintained by KDE, too (look at the authors). I don't know for sure about that one.

What do you think?

Is the requirement on the official site (Windows 7) still correct?

Hey! I wanted to circle back to this. @rempt and @alvinhochun can you take a look at my open questions?

Specifically:

  • Should I still remove Chocolatey, if it's very similar to Homebrew on Mac?
  • Is Windows 7 the correct minimum version?

Thanks!

Hi I have added the details about windows store and steam store in the draft branch, May I ask you to rebase this?

  • Should I still remove Chocolatey, if it's very similar to Homebrew on Mac?

IMO if the Krita package on Chocolatey isn't actively maintained by any core Krita maintainers, it shouldn't be listed.

AFAIK all it does now is running the installer in silent mode, which btw was broken (not actually silent) for quite a while (and the user who reported it wasn't even using Chocolatey).

  • Is Windows 7 the correct minimum version?

I believe it is. At least the installer is still checking for WIndows 7 or above.

@alvinhochun In that case, should I write something like:

Note: the portable (zip-file) version of Krita does not show previews in Windows Explorer automatically. To get these previews, either use the installer version, a store version, or install the shell extension available on the download page.

If someone does have a reason to use the portable versions, they will likely not want the windows store version. I would just skip mentioning the store here.

Then:

Note: the portable (zip-file) version of Krita does not show previews in Windows Explorer automatically. To get these previews, either use a non-portable (installer-based) version or install the shell extension available on the download page.

I'll give it a shot!

Based on @alvinhochun's comments, will remove. I wasn't sure if the package maintainer "KDE Community" indicated that it was an official release.

54

@alvinhochun confirmed Windows 7 is correct.

Yeah, we switch to angle for intel users by default now.

Hi @citelao , is this patch done, can you just remove the warning for intel, so that we can approve and push this?

Thanks @woltherav! I didn't know if there was anything I was supposed to do.

The new tool looks easier :).
