I thought I'd make a thread where I contribute a few ideas I'd like to see considered for Plasma 6, so here it is:
Task Manager:
1. Create 'Launcher Groups' - these would be a set list of launchers that can be applied to any task manager widgets to keep the pins saved throughout task manager instances, like how the menus save your favourites.
The reason for having multiple 'Launcher Groups' is to allow people to not have the same launchers across multiple Task Managers, however I'd like it if it always defaults to the first launcher group for every instance, letting:
- the user easily have different launchers per task manager **if** they want that
- us easily implement something like panels being created automatically on dual-monitor displays akin to Windows 10 later in the future (because the pins on the task manager would be consistent on every monitor by default)
- the user preserve their launcher pins between Desktop Layout changes
Plasma Themes:
1. Add a secondary version of the background and foreground colours that is exclusive to the in-Plasmoid-menus to Plasma Themes as an option. This'd mean themes like a Windows 7 theme, or even a Classic Feren OS theme port to Plasma would be made possible to do as we'd no longer have to make sacrifices because all the text has to be the same colour on both the panel and in Plasmoids.
Desktop Workspace:
1. Allow us to span wallpapers across monitors. I know currently every desktop is treated as if it were an individual activity, therefore making this currently very unlikely to happen, but...
Activities / Workspaces:
1. Ditch Activities. Not entirely, though:
- Move the desktop background changing to be a feature across different virtual desktops instead of across different activities (and therefore different monitors)
- Allow all the virtual desktops to have the application session saving functionality of Activities when Plasma logs out (if not already done)
- Allow workspaces to be 'Set Aside', akin to Classic Microsoft Edge's feature of the same name (this would essentially be like shutting down an Activity and would allow people to keep certain workspaces out of the way for later use)?
Currently, as I see it, Activities is mostly a pointless gimmick feature in Plasma if you use non-KDE applications, and it'd be a whole lot better being partly merged into the workspaces feature (with the non-merged stuff going bye-bye permanently). Plus, if it means features like monitor wallpaper spanning officially being in Plasma finally, it'd make so many people happy, sacrifice aside for that.
That's all I have ideas-wise for now. Feel free to put your opinions below as I'd seriously like these ideas to be considered for Plasma 6 as I feel it'd make it even better than it's going to be. I might have more ideas in the future, in which case I'll reply with the extra ideas in those due times.
