Turn the font size up to 11
Closed, InvalidPublic

Description

Why change at all:

  • The default font sizes (8-10pt) are a bit too small for 1920x1080 screens.
  • Users complain about the appearance of text and small text never really looks good unless it's bitmapped.

Why 11pt:

  • 10pt works well for 1366x768, but as stated before, it's too small for 1080p.
  • 11pt isn't that bad for 1366x768, but 12pt makes the UI take up way too much space at that resolution.
  • 11pt is an appreciable difference in size for 1080p.
  • Other desktop environments like GNOME use 11pt as the default font size.

Font size suggestions:

  • General: 11 (+1)
  • Fixed Width: 11 (+2) or 12 (+3)
    • Why was this smaller than general text?
    • When Fixed Width is used, it's usually in a context where a lot of text has to be read carefully.
  • Small: 9 (+1)
  • Toolbar: 11 (+2)
    • This doesn't seem to be used. Remove/hide?
  • Menu: 11 (+1)
    • This doesn't seem to be used. Remove/hide?
  • Window Title: 11 (+1)

Apparently there were prior discussions that I forgot about because they weren't written down. The consensus seems to be that the font size and scaling should be set by default based on the physical DPI.

Previous discussions were written down. See T7864 (for Kubuntu) and D14869 (for all of KDE).

Maybe you can start a Phab task to discuss the conclusion of setting the font size or scale factor by default based on physical DPI? I don't think we have one.

Also, if the Menu and Toolbar sizes are not actually used, we should definitely hide them from the KCM.
